Changeling Part I

changeling, valley or mountain
clay kin, river it’s bound in
when I left the town a rain cloud pillowed through
How was I to know the rain clouds follow you?
How long is this stretch of highway
are there miles and miles of driving left to do?
changeling
valley to mountains
sea change
river’s own foundling
I took the train to the edge of the county
The land is still green and blue
There is the same slate and brown mirror river
where I’ll come southbound down to you
narrow water, brittle bone
wandering daughter, always coming home
changeling, narrow river
sea change, currents splinter
drowned mouth
salt shroud
Coming back to town a storm cloud's coming too
I did not intend lay this upon you
How long is this stretch of railroad?
are there miles and miles of rolling left to do?
wait at the station till noon
I am unchanged I assure you
See how my eyes are still blue
Let me in all of your fine rooms
changeling, bauble bridges
broke in, child in image
wound down, left town

she lies below
easy as a stone slow eroding
‘lo mirrored skin
she remains within
watching her image wander further
girl underwater
girl underground
Cast out a line for my old home county
reel like a knife through the undertow
call and I’ll answer but words rise slowly
bubbles in mud from a body remote
She lies below,
easy as a stone slow eroding
weeds pull in close
twisting as she flows
flaking in pieces to the ocean
don’t pull me back
from this fine trap
Ask of the pike, of the egrets nesting
ask of the horseflies that whir in close
better a word from a right whole creature
don’t ask me now, I’ve unknown what they know
Ask of the reeds,
Ask it of the pine needles floating
go tell the eel
the worry that you feel
don’t burden your troubles on the sunken
(instrumental break)
don’t pull me back
from this fine trap
don’t pull me back
from this fine trap
don’t pull me back
from this fine trap
don’t, oh no
ring hollow
don’t oh no
ring hollow
Cast out a line for the body stolen
scour the bank for a shape you know
wade to your knees in the swirling elfam
curse on the nixie, the kelpie, the crow
greedy it soaks up the warmth of the bed
notice it’s blankness, the chill that it sheds
you’d think it a sculpture, you’d think it were dead
but even in silence demands to be fed
she stays below,
easy as a stone slow eroding
weeds pull in close
twisting as she flows
flaking in pieces to the ocean

they will not leave again without what they have come for
the pale and lifeless entity will draw them here to your door
no shadow dims the flame of what they know you’ve done nor
conceals a face which never will be clean again, no never more
And there will be no shelter
to face your blame
in the eyes of your brothers
and prove your name
In the light of your creator
the mask you made will burn away
the spark, the animus will lead us through the ruse
the smoke of what remains will mark the sand and fill your mouth again
a hundred hands to grab, a thousand arrows loosed and
a cloudless sky to burn and paint your shadow down from toe to tooth
And there will be no shelter
to face your blame
in the eyes of your brothers
and prove your name
In the light of your creator
the mask you made will burn away
changeling, see it ends today
Oh lord, oh god have mercy on our souls
I did not know the weight of what I borrowed, what I stole
A fool was I, to cast aside the life I’d come to know
to sink down in the river, let my heart lie like a stone.
unholy creature run and hide under the mud
the bank from where you came, from where you shaped a body from the clay
what force that animates the fish, the reeds, the roots
to trade a child for silt enchanted, wrapped in silk and fed our fruit
A body is no shelter
to hide from shame
from the gaze of your reflections
that house what name
In the shallows of the river
the mask I made, it slipped away
here at last it ends today
